He shows up often enough to lock me back in whenever the Steward stories about the Dark King and the Lady got a little too long.

Nearly every review I read includes some variation of Pacat is at her best when writing for James. I’m far from the only one with this response. James, a villainous character, pops up every so often and there’s just something electric about him. He did a few things that seemed just a bit off, not fully out of character but just slightly odd and seemingly there for the convenience of the plot. There’s a bit too much exposition about the battle from the old days, and in a few scenes I felt like I was losing my grasp of Will as a character. As soon as Will and Violet found the Stewards and started to learn more about the dark sword that nearly killed them and the man who is hunting Will, I noticed my attention waning a bit. Then Dark Rise hit a wall for a while.īooks tend to pick up pace when the hero starts to get answers, but Dark Rise did the opposite. For the first hundred pages or so I had that I’m not totally sure what is happening but it’s really cool feeling. There’s a lot of action upfront, but it is the kind of action that mixes character development. I immediately loved Violet, whose hero-worship for her brother is matched only by her drive to prove herself his equal. I loved the beginning of the novel, when we meet Will and get the first hints of his past and future. Sure, some fantasy worlds hit the ground running, but others start a bit slow and pay off later.ĭark Rise is starts a bit slow to pay off later. Most readers have seen a standard high school before, know how cell phones work, and understand the basic function of the police, for instance. It’s not like a contemporary novel where you can just start the story with the comfortable knowledge that your readers will understand and recognize the general setting. What’s the social structure like? How does magic work? What kinds of technology are there? What’s the geography? Who has the power? What’s possible? That takes a lot. You need to create an entirely new society. When you introduce a new world, there’s a lot of early legwork that goes in. But City of Bones specifically? It’s okay. I adore the Mortal Instruments as a whole. My go-to example of this phenomenon is City of Bones. That being said, there are a few issues.Ī lot of series start okay and get amazing by the end. It is immensely readable, and I am very eager to read the rest of the series. The characters, for the most part, are very compelling. I absolutely adored the graphic novel series that Pacat wrote alongside artist Johanna the Mad, and I’ve very much wanted to read more of her work, but have been a bit hesitant to do so because her other books-the Captive Prince series-are dark romance and that’s not really my scene.
